Exposure to toxic levels of mold can cause chronic physical and mental issues. Health issues include but are not limited to: throat irritation, itchy eyes, headaches, skin irritation, cough and wheezing, and nasal stuffiness.
California Health & Safety Code §17920.3 states that a building or portion thereof is deemed substandard if there is “Visible mold growth, as determined by a health officer or a code enforcement officer, as defined in Section 829.5 of the Penal Code, excluding the presence of mold that is minor and found on surfaces that can accumulate moisture as part of their properly functioning and intended use.” Therefore, it is imperative to immediately hire counsel and notify health or code enforcement if and when there is visible mold growth in your home.
What Causes Mold Growth?
Mold can grow for different reasons. Most common can be from a water leak that was not properly remediated; poor ventilation; visible water damage; wet or damp conditions, and/or burst water pipe.

Step 1: Notify your landlord in writing of the issue.
Step 2: Take photographs of the mold.
Step 3: Maintain a journal of all issues/problems that have been reported and/or have existed during your tenancy.
